NOT A CARTOON –
Aug. 22, 2026 – As I was lazily scrolling through my news feed over coffee last Saturday morning, I came across an article that caught my interest immediately because the topic seemed so … unusual. I don’t know if you were aware of this or not, because I certainly wasn’t, but evidently, there are alcoholic mice. Which would of course account for all of those mysterious stumbling noises and muttered, squeaky invectives that I hear every time I go into the attic.
According to the article, addiction researchers found that hard-drinking mice, should they undergo a period of abstention, become even more alcoholic when they fall off the wagon. Of course, one must immediately wonder where all of the hard-drinking mice go to drink. Do they drink alone, filled with remorse and self-pity over the hash they have made of their lives? Do they drink to assuage the bitterness of finding themselves unemployed, broke, and friendless? Perhaps they drink to reduce the anxiety of having to live in the same house with your crack-addled cat.
