Rehab Rehabilitation?
The Rehab Industry Needs to Clean Up Its Act. Here’s How
No one argues that the American addiction treatment system is anywhere near optimal-even its cheerleaders recognize that there’s miles to go before all people with addiction have access to respectful, ethical, effective and evidence-based care. Worse, the past year has seen myriad media exposes and financial, sexual and maltreatment scandals. Of course, done right, addiction treatment can transform lives, with a hugely positive impact on society. It is often the difference between life and death, or between a productive recovery and a life of despair. Yet all too often that opportunity is being blown.

There is no scientific evidence that psychiatric diagnoses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are valid or useful, according to the leading body representing Britain’s clinical psychologists…” On the contrary, there is now overwhelming evidence that people break down as a result of a complex mix of social and psychological circumstances – bereavement and loss, poverty and discrimination, trauma and abuse,” Johnstone said. Sugar Addiction Is Real
…Professor Tim Noakes argued at a hearing into his conduct on Monday … Quoting obesity researcher Zoe Harcombe’s The Obesity Epidemic, the professor of exercise science and sports medicine said sugar met criteria for substance abuse and may be addictive for some individuals when consumed in a binge-like manner … This conclusion was reinforced by the changes seen in the brain’s limbic system that were similar to those caused by drugs like cocaine and heroin.

What Do the English Know About Plays
Matthew Perry’s Debut Play ‘The End Of Longing’ is Savaged by Critics VIDEO
…However, the reviews weren’t all bad with WhatsOnStage.com’s Michael Coveney enjoying the production: ‘The writing is wired, raw, politically incorrect and very funny, and it’s given a sharp kick in the goolies by some superb performances from all four actors in (director) Lindsay Posner’s shrewd, on-the-nose production, monologues and terse exchanges.’ COMMENTS: Critics are nearly always pretentious, insecure people who think they are more intelligent than the rest of us but should never be listened to. You know the sort. They like to mention the names of obscure French towns & make out they’re great food and wine connoisseurs – but actually eat beans on toast when they’re at home (which happen to be filthy flats in so-called up & coming areas).

“We know there is more going on than just our basic mission but sometimes we need to be reminded of it and this case has reminded us of that. I have told Michael we are not going to throw him out just because he was unfortunate enough to win the lotto.”…  Dr. Vince Savage is the director of the Aspen Homeless Shelter where Engfors has been a client for the past 5 years … Savage says the breathalyzers used by the shelter help Engfors maintain his sobriety, and that his eventual goal is to reconnect with his estranged daughter in New York.

Congress Finally Gives A Damn About Heroin Addiction
There was a remarkable focus on heroin all week. More than a dozen senators – including the top leaders in each party – brought up the topic in discussions on the Senate floor and in committee rooms. It even surfaced repeatedly when intelligence officials briefed lawmakers on the threats facing the United States in 2016, and included opioids.

Recovery Coaches to Help Those Fighting Addiction
Recovery coaches, Silvey said, would be a group of people trained in how to provide help for those in recovery from drug addiction and can be either allies or addicts in recovery. The only stipulation for joining is a person must either live or work in Strafford County. Training for the first group of coaches started Feb. 6 and consists of six-hour sessions held over five weeks. The course would usually cost $500, but Silvey said volunteers were offered the classes for $75 with the condition participants donate their time back to the centers when it opens.

DMX Almost Dies From Overdose
The rapper DMX almost died from a drug overdose in Yonkers on Monday night – but cops saved his life, a police source said Tuesday. The 45-year-old “Slippin” singer  collapsed  next to a white BMW – and stopped breathing – in the parking lot of a Ramada Inn at around 6:20 p.m., the sources said. He also had no pulse. Four cops gave him CPR and a medic injected him with Narcan, an anti-opioid used to reverse the effects of a heroin overdose, the police source said.

Sobriety In South Dakota Linked To 4% Drop In Deaths
To reduce its prison population, South Dakota created the unique 24/7 Sobriety program, which focused its attention on a precise slice of its offender population – those whose crimes involved alcohol. Very simply, the program required these offenders to abstain from drinking while on probation. A National Institutes of Health-funded study examines the impact of this program and finds it to be associated with a 4 percent drop in state deaths.

Prilosec, Nexium and Prevacid Linked to Dementia
The results are surprising enough that at least one leading expert on aging, Dr. Malaz Boustani, plans to share the findings with older patients who are using PPIs. Boustani said earlier studies have linked another type of antacid, H2 blockers, with an increased risk of dementia. Up to now, he’s recom-mended patients use PPIs to treat acid reflux and steer clear of H2 blockers like Tagamet, Pepcid and Zantac.

Australia About To Legalize Growing Pot
Australia appears set to legalize the growing of marijuana for medical use nationwide. It looks guaranteed to become law, as the main opposition party immediately pledged support for it.

Inspiring Aberdeen Man Says Rapping Saved Him From Painkiller Addiction VIDEO
An Aberdeen man who was rushed to A&E and almost died after becoming so addicted to painkillers his kidneys and liver nearly failed has told of how he turned his life around – through the power of rap music … Mr Macleod said: “I started to take more and more pills to ease my pains, and soon I would be going from one pharmacy, and then to another pharmacy, and then to another.

OPINION & COMMENTARY
Why Pres. Obama’s $1.1 Billion Initiative to Combat Opioid Addiction Is Doomed
While some might welcome Obama’s attention to the abuse of prescription painkillers and heroin, Cindy Perlin, author of The Truth About Chronic Pain Treatments: The Best and Worst Strategies for Becoming Pain Free, is unimpressed. She says, “The president’s initiative, like most proposed by the mainstream medical community and other politicians, is doomed to failure because it is akin to closing the barn door after the horses have already escaped.”

What Could Go Wrong?
A Vaccine For Drug Addiction Is In The Works
Treating drug addiction with a vaccine might become a solution to combat prescription drug and heroin addiction and the rapid rise in overdose deaths. A vaccine, which has undergone tests in animal subjects so far, holds promise, said Dr. William Compton, deputy director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse. The vaccine would “produce an antibody response which would latch onto the drug of use … and because they’re large molecules they will not be able to cross the blood-brain barrier.”
