MEDIA: Book Recommendation
If You Want To Read Another Book About Addiction, Read This One!
If there is one book on your recovery booklist for 2016, I’d recommend William (Bill) Borchert’s newest jewel, How I Became My Father…A DRUNK.  It’s a well-written, heartfelt story about the unfolding drama of generational addiction and recovery and the influential role of the family.  It’s a great read not just for students and young adults who are struggling with addiction, but also for their families and extended families who can support them in recovery. The book is engaging, entertaining, and offers hope. Borchert is an excellent writer.

Recovery Road: Why You Should Be Watching Freeform’s Addiction Drama VIDEO
Shows about addiction are inherently frustrating. Such a circuitous process centered around incremental personal progress and devastating setbacks doesn’t always make for the best television. Not only can it be hard to watch characters you grow to love self-destruct, especially if they’re aware of what they’re doing and show no signs of wanting to get better, addiction is a lifelong trouble that doesn’t always have an end point.

Like many other neurochemicals, dopamine plays multiple roles in the brain and body. Among the brain’s multiple dopamine pathways, a prominent one is involved in reward-motivated behavior; deficiencies in dopamine are associated with a number of conditions including addiction, depression and psychological and neurological disorders. Dopamine’s importance and prevalence in multiple brain functions makes it challenging to study, and its role in addictive behavior is unclear.

Alcoholism in Music

The song is “The Bottle”, being performed live, and features clips of drunkies and the economically depressed NYC of the late 1970’s.  CLASSIC Often d.j.s will drop a needle on “The Bottle” at a climactic moment in a party, driving the crowd wild, and even while dancing along I’ve been struck by the irony of half-drunk people raving it up to what is a essentially a biting sermon about the ravages of alcohol.
