July 18, 2025 –  Dr. Karla issued more than 30,000 prescriptions for oxycodone to over 1,500 different patients. At various times, Karla would issue as many as 50 prescriptions for oxycodone in a single day. An investigation found that at least three separate patients, Karla, were prescribed Oxycodone in exchange for sexual favors.Former employees also reported female patients complained that Kalra was touching them sexually and demanding sexual favors to obtain their prescriptions. One patient accused Kalra of assaulting her multiple times and was forced to undergo anal sex during an appointment.

In addition to his alleged sexual exploits, Kalra also allegedly billed for visits that never occurred, according to court documents.

If convicted of distributing a controlled substance, the penalty includes up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine. Healthcare fraud carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

“Physicians hold a position of profound responsibility—but as alleged, Dr. Kalra used that position to fuel addiction, exploit vulnerable patients for sex, and defraud New Jersey’s public healthcare program,” said U.S. Attorney Alina Habba. “By allegedly exchanging prescriptions for sexual favors and billing Medicaid for ghost appointments, he not only violated the law but endangered lives.”
