Rob Ekno: Addiction’s Toll on Mental Health  - Addiction/Recovery eBulletin

VIDEO – ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? –

May 19, 2025 – “We think we’ve done enough dumb things, or horrible things, to never be worthy,” Rob said. “And so, why get sober, I’ve already screwed up my life let me just keep making another bad decision, after another.” Motivational speaker and author Rob Ekno spent years struggling. He ended up on the streets of Ft. Lauderdale, when he knew things needed to change. Ekno has shared many stories from his life in his books, which center around his life in addiction.

One of the stories he recalls is when a pastor commented on his compassion for the homeless, saying the pastor referred to the homeless as “those people.”

Ekno said that reaction is what makes it harder for people in addiction to feel like people care about them.

“You want to know why we have an issue? Because when ‘us people,’ alcoholics and addicts, get in the midst of our disease and then our mental health starts going wacky, we’re known as ‘those people,’” he said. “That’s the problem.”

Ekno said one of the easiest ways people can help someone who is struggling with addiction is to remind them of their own self worth.
