Aug. 8, 2022 – That first meeting was tense, to say the least. Rossetto, now 84, remembered Borovitz as “a very large man who interrogated me.” She recalled him saying, “What does this bleeding heart, liberal, social worker broad know about what convicts need?”
Borovitz, 70, remembers it differently.
“I introduced myself, welcomed her, and she got defensive, snobby and bitchy right away. I just kept saying, ‘We just want to tell you what we need,'” Borovitz recalled. Rossetto replied, according to him, “Well if you’re so smart, when you get out, you can come help me.”
Sure enough, when he was released from prison in 1988, Borovitz walked into Beit T’Shuvah.
Though they seemed an unlikely pairing, together they ended up saving thousands of lives through Beit T’Shuvah. During their three decades at the center, they provided a number of treatment and recovery programs oriented around Jewish teachings. The couple and their work are the subjects of the hourlong documentary “The Jewish Jail Lady and The Holy Thief,” The film will be screened at the 14th Annual REEL Recovery Film Festival on October 23rd at 5pm at the Laemmle NoHo theater, 5240 Lankershim Blvd. North Hollywood, CA 91601.
