Nov. 7, 2025 – More American veterans die by suicide each day than the average daily combat deaths during the Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan wars combined, California Governor Gavin Newsom recently signed a bill fast-tracking research into psychedelic treatments for mental health conditions, especially post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). For decades, psychedelics like MDMA and psilocybin, better known as ecstasy and magic mushrooms, were off-limits in medicine, labeled as a Schedule I substance. But that’s starting to change.
According to the Veterans Health Administration’s Office of Research and Development, mounting evidence now shows that, under clinical supervision, these compounds can help patients revisit trauma without overwhelming fear, leading to measurable recovery from severe PTSD symptoms. Many veterans who didn’t respond to antidepressants or talk therapy are finding relief through these therapies. As one VA analysis noted, MDMA-assisted therapy can reduce fear, increase empathy, and expand emotional openness, allowing patients to process traumatic memories safely. In two major Phase 3 clinical trials, MDMA produced dramatic reductions in PTSD symptoms compared to placebo, according to the VA.
