PROFILE

With 15 years experience in the treatment industry, Paul Moen incorporates the principles of his personal recovery into his professional role as CEO at Balboa Horizons. He values integrity, earning a reputation among his peers as an honest and reliable treatment professional. Never content to stay behind the scenes, Paul is involved in every aspect of treatment at Balboa Horizons, working hands-on to ensure that his company delivers a product he believes in.

He is the founder, current board member and co-chair of the Orange County MAAT—Men’s Association of Addiction Treatment. Paul serves on the advisory board for the Peggy Albrecht Friendly House, a community-based non-profit organization serving women in recovery in the Greater Los Angeles area, as well as on the advisory board for Writers in Treatment and Reel Recovery Film Festival—an organization that supports men and women in the writing industry who suffer from alcoholism and drug addiction. He is also an active member of the Surfrider Foundation, and is on the board for Rock to Recovery, which gives individuals in recovery a chance to create original music working as a group with professional musicians. This innovative program was launched and incubated at Balboa Horizons, and is now in over 30 treatment centers, and was most recently picked up by Wounded Warriors.

17. Do you think the U.S. should adopt the Portuguese Decriminalization Model?

Considering there¹s no proof that our system has ever worked, we should take a hard look at it. The only people that benefit from our system is the Correctional officer union, privatized prisons and Drug cartels.

18. What is the best piece of advice you¹ve been given?

Go on to the bitter end, blotting out the consciousness of my intolerable situation as best as I could; or accept spiritual help.

19. What¹s the greatest risk you’ve ever taken?

Jumping off Spitting Caves in Oahu.

20. What is the proudest moment in your life?

The creation of the family group at Balboa Horizons.
