Eric Dane Shared Sobriety Journey Before Death - Addiction/Recovery eBulletin

SOBER LEGACY –

February 20, 2026 – Eric Dane was candid about his sobriety journey before his death from ALS at age 53. Dane previously revealed he struggled with substance abuse while he was starring on Grey’s Anatomy. The actor played Dr. Mark Sloan, also known as McSteamy, for eight seasons. “If you take the whole eight years on Grey’s Anatomy, I was f***ed up longer than I was sober. And that’s when things started going sideways for me,” Dane recalled.  “It was overwhelming, and I think I just wanted to pretend that it wasn’t and that I was comfortable with it. Act like you’ve been there, but you haven’t been there.” Dane ultimately got sober after going to a treatment facility in 2011. In April 2025, Dane revealed that he was diagnosed with ALS. After publicly battling the condition for more than a year, Dane died in February 2026.
