PROFILE

Dave Perry is a Director of Photography for indie film, broadcast, and corporate film. Since 2003, Dave has worked with talented directors, producers, production companies, and agencies from Florida to California to create powerful, award winning work. His critical eye for composition is evident in his compelling cinematography. When not on a production, Dave chills in Roanoke Virginia kicking it with his sons, grandson, and recovery family, living large doin the “3 Ms — Movies, Music, and Motorcycles.”

Q. If you are in recovery, what was your DOC and when did you discontinue its use?

A. Weed, 1988 (relapsed twice since then on everything except weed)

Q. Which film have you watched the most?

A. The Godfather

Q. Who is your favorite celebrity in recovery?

A. Garry Oldman, Owen Wilson

Q. Where did you go to ‘get away?

A. On one of my motorcycles up in the mountains

Q. How do you measure success?

A. Success is measured by the contentment and fulfillment one feels inside themselves, not based on external wealth or material possessions. It’s measured by one’s ability to accept who they are.

Q. What is your current hobby?

A. the 3 “M’s”, movies, motorcycles, music!

Q. What prominent fe/male figure would you most like to date?

A. Kim Basinger

Q. What is your favorite: TV/cable/digital series?

A. Breaking Bad

Q. What is your favorite: Band/composer/musical artist?

A. Grateful Dead

Q. Have you ever been arrested and, if so, what for?

A. Drunk driving, evading the police, vandalism

Q. Do you have any children? Grandchildren?

A. Yes, 2 sons, 2 step-daughters, 1 grandson

Q. What’s your favorite NPR radio show?

A. Radiolab

Q. What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

A. Be true to one’s self. That’s been a struggle for me throughout my life, though, I’m much better at it now.

Q. Do you think addiction is an illness, a disease, a choice, or a wicked twist of fate?

A. Disease

Q. What are five things you always carry with you?

A. iPhone, keys, wallet, guitar pick, medallion for current year of recovery (currently 11)

Q. What is your favorite concert venue?

A. Hampton Coliseum

Q. What’s the greatest risk you’ve ever taken?

A. Leaving a job to start my own business, with no savings, a mortgage, car payment, and raising two kids as a single father

Q. Would you like to share a favorite quote?

A. “Lately it occurs to me, what a long strange trip it’s been.”

Q. What is the proudest moment in your life?

A. Birth of my first son
