April 3, 2025 – “People are literally dying from just taking a pill that they thought was regular pain medicine, and it’ll be fentanyl, and they’ll be dead,” said Stuart Bostwick. “We had this 21, 22-year-old girl. Beautiful. Smart. Could have done anything she wanted to do,” Bostwick says. “Literally, had an amazing future ahead of her if she wanted it. She got out [and] went to sober living. I don’t know if she knew she was taking fentanyl or not. She ended up being on a ventilator, and she died.”
At least four facilities participated in a conference at ULM’s Bayou Pointe to address addictions. Staff at the conference said fentanyl is treacherous in the opioid crisis because it’s highly addictive and in high demand.
“Patients coming in will think they’re only taking methamphetamines; they’ll test positive for fentanyl. It’s very scary. It’s a completely different world, and the more we can all work together, the more lives we can save,” Bostwick says.
The DEA seized more than 30 million fentanyl pills and over 4,000 lbs. of fentanyl powder in 2024. The agency says it arrested more than 2,000 people for fentanyl-related charges that year.
