Outreach and Reentry Support Made the Difference - Addiction/Recovery eBulletin

2nd CHANCES MATTER –

Mar. 12, 2026 – Sarah Newberry first connected with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Transitional Assistance Reentry Team (START) while incarcerated within the County Sheriff’s correctional system. The START team met with Newberry nine times to evaluate her needs, explore her goals for community re-integration, and connect her with treatment options. Newberry agreed to participate and was transported to a treatment facility. Regrettably, she struggled to maintain sobriety and later became homeless again. On May 29, 2025, the West Valley – Innovative Remote On-site Assistance Delivery (InnROADs) Homeless Outreach team encountered Newberry at Memorial Park in Upland. At the time, she was experiencing homelessness and severe drug addiction, along with numerous arrests and hospitalizations. The InnROADs team provided ongoing and consistent support and follow-up throughout her challenges. Over the course of their engagement, they made approximately 10 follow-up contacts, including helping her retrieve personal property from the Upland Police Department. On Oct. 16, 2025, Newberry agreed to enter drug rehabilitation and was transported to Inland Valley Recovery Services (IVRS) in Upland for treatment.
