And while it’s not always obvious, there are often warning signs that suggest there’s a problem. These tend to fall into three broad categories: physical signs, behavioral indicators and relationship and social signs. A sudden noticeable deterioration of physical appearance or hygiene can be a red flag that something’s going on, says David Campbell, a doctor of social work, licensed psychotherapist and clinical and program director of Recover Together Bend, a drug and alcohol treatment facility in Bend, Oregon.
