Feb. 25, 2025 – RAVING REVIEW: MY OWN NORMAL doesn’t ask for sympathy but exists as an unapologetic and deeply personal account of life, love, and self-definition. It doesn’t try to change minds—it simply presents a reality that few get to see, which challenges outdated notions about disability without making it the sole focus.
Alexander Freeman, the filmmaker, and the main subject, has spent years crafting work highlighting underrepresented voices, tackling themes of disability, mental health, and relationships with rawness. But MY OWN NORMAL is his most personal project yet, and that immediacy makes it so compelling. The camera isn’t just documenting his life—it’s a tool that allows him to tell his story on his terms. It’s one thing to see a film about disability made by an outsider; it’s entirely different when the person at the center of the narrative is also shaping it. Freeman takes control of his narrative, refusing to let others dictate how his story should be told.
