Q&A with Laura Robbins

Laura Robbins, writer and podcaster

Laura Robbins has been active for many years as a speaker and school trustee, and is credited for creating The Buckley School’s nationally recognized committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Her recent articles in the Huffington Post on the subjects of race, recovery and divorce have garnered her world-wide acclaim.

She is a 2018 LA Moth StorySlam winner and host of the popular podcast, The Only One In The Room, which is available on all podcast platforms.  In 2019, Laura was named the weekly, US contributor for the Italian Newsmagazine, The Daily Worker.it.  Laura currently sits on the advisory board for the San Diego Writer’s Festival and the Outliers HQ podcast Festival.  Laura is also a founding member of Moving Forewords, the first national memoirist collective of its kind.

Q. If you are in recovery, what was your Drug of Choice and when did you discontinue its use?
A. Ambien and vodka

Q. Which film have you watched the most?
A. Love Actually

Q. Do prefer to living by the ocean, lake, river, mountaintop, or penthouse?
A. I’m a city mouse.

Q. What is your favorite hotel or resort?
A. Parrot Cay in Turks and Caicos

Q. Where do you go to ‘get away”?
A. Anywhere where the water is over 90 degrees

Q. What is your biggest or littlest pet peeve?
A. There isn’t enough space: People yawning on the phone, chewing with their mouths open, using the word “literally” when they mean figuratively. 

Q. How do you measure success?
A. By my level of serenity and how many real friends I have

Q. Who was your biggest influence throughout your life?
A. My parents, no question

Q. What is your favorite: TV/cable/digital series?
A. Hard to pick a favorite, but right now I’m re-watching The Sopranos.

A. Memoir

A. Museum of African American History and Culture in DC

A. Hard to pick a favorite, right now Lauryn Hill and Stevie Wonder are dominating my playlist

A. Hamilton, what a silly question!

A. Another tough one, right now I’m going to say 19-year old Valyn Lyric Turner

A. Vegan

A. Los Angeles

A. Not yet

A. I have two sons, no grandchildren yet (that I know of)

A. Getting divorced

A. Not taking Starbucks stock in trade for PR services back in the ’90s

A. Taking my 1-year cake.
