The science on marijuana is settled. The assertions that continue to be made linking marijuana use to serious drug addiction by officials like Michele Leonhart, the former administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration, are contradicted by facts … The majority of people who use marijuana (and most illicit drugs) do so in nonproblematic ways. Legalizing it protects their ability to do so without fear of punishment. And for those who develop a substance dependency, marijuana regulation will generate revenue to support drug treatment for those who need and want it.
Hundreds are moving into Palm Beach County’s suburbs, where residents say they’re bringing needles, trash and lots of lights and sirens. Joe Onimus walks around the house with a 9mm handgun tucked in his waistband – protection, he says, after a shouting match with people in the waterfront mansion two doors down in Boynton Beach. The mansion is one of three sober homes on a cul-de-sac his frustrated neighbors call “Rehab Drive.”

Mindfulness Therapy Works for Recurrent Depression
“It is about choice for patients and adding another choice for people at high risk of depressive relapse to stay well in the long-term,” Kuyken told Reuters Health in an email. “When mindfulness is combined with cognitive therapy, one of the things we see is people being trained to regard their thoughts as just thoughts and not to get ensnared by them,” said Richard Davidson, who wrote an editorial accompanying the study.
The Woman Whose Addiction Story Shook Obama Now Has A Bill In Her Name VIDEO
On Wednesday, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) introduced Jessie’s Law, a bill named after Jessica Grubb and designed to try to prevent the circumstances that led to her death from occurring elsewhere. The legislation seeks to make it harder for physicians to unknowingly prescribe large quantities of opioid medication to recovering addicts. It does so by expanding the universe of people who can provide consent for a patient’s substance abuse records to be disclosed to their physicians.
Sunday after Sunday, around 8 a.m., even in the fiercest heat and cold, Nowak had passed the panhandler on the way to host his gardening and environment show on WCPT radio. They encountered each other so often that they eventually traded names – Mike, Nic – and occasionally talked a little…
There’s nothing I can do to prevent my child from becoming an addict. Here’s why that’s okay
As a recovered alcoholic and drug addict who grew up in an alcoholic home, my greatest fear is that my daughter will turn out like me. I think a lot about how to stop her from walking down a path that seems predestined. My paternal grandmother died of cirrhosis when my father was just a boy … I’ve heard, she was the stereotypical, neglectful drunk. But my father is different… a kind of control over his drinking that I was never able to, which is why I found myself in rehab at age 26, while he’s never even contemplated quitting in his 60+ years.

11 things people don’t tell you about growing up with an alcoholic parent
My name is Ashley, and I am the child of an addict. As a kid, I cried when our family dinner reservation shrunk from four to three after a man with glassy eyes stumbled through the door. I didn’t guzzle the vodka, but I felt the heartbreak of missed birthdays. I feel like I should weigh 500 pounds from all the “I’m sorry” chocolate donuts. I had to grow up quicker, but it made me into the person I am today.

Alcoholic Root Beer is Dumb
Alcoholic root beer like suddenly having alcoholic Big League Chew or alcoholic baseball cards or alcoholic cupcakes, and I know what you’re thinking – yeah, actually people are already doing alcoholic cupcakes. You’re right, that was a poor example. But someone took black licorice and made Jagermeister out of it, and what happened? A bunch of people slept in parking lots and stole historical items from bars and woke up with construction equipment exploding in their brains. Nothing good, is what I’m saying.

Could marijuana help treat painkiller and heroin addiction?
The growing number of patients who claim marijuana has helped them drop their painkiller habit has intrigued lawmakers and emboldened advocates. Many are pushing for cannabis as a treatment for the abuse of opioids and illegal narcotics such as heroin, and as an alternative to painkillers. It’s a tempting sell in New England, hard hit by the painkiller and heroin crisis. But there’s a problem: There is very little research showing marijuana works as a treatment for such addictions.

3 Codependent Traits That Breed Anger and Resentment
A hallmark of codependency is when seeking approval becomes more important than self-care. Over time this creates a pattern of control. Melody Beattie, author of Codependent No More, defines a codependent as: “Someone who has let another person’s behavior affect him or her, and who is obsessed with controlling that person’s behavior.” This article focuses on three common traits of codependency: control, people pleasing and the lie of being “fine.” Here you’ll learn how to transform these traits into relationship assets.
Recovery centers around the U.S. say they have long struggled to attract and retain workers, given the low pay, the stigma attached to addiction, and the high burnout from dealing with difficult patients. Many counselors leave the field after only a few years. Yet clinics now must not only replace those workers, but fill an expected surge of new positions in the coming years to meet rising demand for addiction treatment…

Exercise May Help Treat Addiction
Researchers at the University of California Los Angeles report exercise helps the brain add new dopamine receptors, which they said lowers desire for methamphetamine and makes it easier to recover from addiction. Methamphetamine use creates a rush of dopamine, a substance that naturally provides sensations of pleasure and satisfaction but also causes the drug’s approximately six-hour high, which results in a reduction in the number of dopamine receptors as the drug is used more and for longer periods of time.

What’s the Link Between My Insomnia, My Alcoholism and My Recovery From Both?
Counting sheep, listening to cassette tapes, heavy breathing, warm milk … I tried everything to cure my childhood insomnia. My mom gave me melatonin pills and they didn’t work, so I begged her for something stronger. It wasn’t until my twenties that I discovered that warm milk did work-if I spiked it with whiskey. Then I began skipping the milk. Starting around 10 years old, I dreaded bedtime. Alone in the dark with my anxiety-ridden mind, I would stare…
