Oct. 16, 2023 – On today’s Alternative to Meds Podcast, host Debbie Nelson is delighted to welcome Dr. David Wiss to discuss the importance of nutrition during recovery.
As an accomplished dietitian, Dr. Wiss has found a powerful correlation between poor health and poor nutrition. His goal is to bridge the current gap between mental and physical health by pushing people to focus on how adequate nutrition can improve them both. Join Alternative to Meds Center as we discuss how your nutrition plays a fundamental role in your journey of recovery.
Your Personal Relationship With Food
Nelson notes that your relationship with food is just as important as your relationship with your family. Consider the fact that you eat three meals per day, seven times per week, for your entire life. So, when you fail to put energy into your relationship with food, it can be easy for your mental and physical health to diminish.
As an individual in recovery, your relationship with food has a larger influence on your journey than you might realize. Both Debbie Nelson and Dr. David Wiss have struggled with poor nutritional habits and experienced just how heavily it can take a toll on both physical and mental health. Low-quality diets, dependencies on caffeine or junk food, and a lack of nutrients can all lead to health problems and higher chances of relapse.
Finding a Middle Ground
Anyone looking to fix their relationship with food must understand that there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach when doing so. Regarding your nutrition, Dr. Wiss emphasizes that only your body can decide what’s best for you. Everyone’s body is unique and has different needs as they recover. Finding a middle ground in the information you learn from social media and your counselors can help you create a nutrition plan that is effective in your life.
