Sep 3, 2019 – “The problem in the industry isn’t that we have a few bad actors,” Tami Mark, a health economist at the research foundation RTI International, told me. “It’s that a large portion of the addiction industry isn’t providing the type of care that we know leads to recovery.” America is in the middle of an addiction crisis, with alcohol and drug overdoses linked to tens of thousands of deaths each year. At the same time, the addiction treatment system meant to deal with this crisis often has high costs and poor quality. We want to shine a light on these problems, and how they’re affecting people, financially and otherwise, every day.
