Teens living with parents who smoke pot more likely to use themselves

Nov. 29, 2019 – The study finds parental marijuana use is associated with increased risk of marijuana and tobacco use, and opioid misuse by children. Researcher Bertha Madras says states like Michigan might keep this in mind when structuring cannabis education programs. “Once you set the platform for exploring substances, you create a mindset that is willing to delve into the others as well as the primary one or the one you initiated,” Madras said.

“Pediatricians should be asking if parents are using at home and just to educate parents that this could confer risk in fostering trans-generational substance use,” Madras said. The study appears in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
