APR. 29 2019 – Researchers at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital analyzed monthly rates of suicides among individuals ages 10 to 64 between Jan. 1, 2013, and Dec. 31, 2017. They said April 2017, the month after the Season One premiere of “13 Reasons Why,” had the highest suicide rate among ages 10 to 17, increasing by 28.9%.
The study, published in the peer-reviewed Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, also found that there were about 195 more youth suicides than expected in the nine months following the March 31, 2017 release.
