Sept. 25, 2024 – In addition to managing her diet, Demi also avoids alcohol. “I had almost 20 years of sobriety. I had a detour. And now I have over 12 years.”
Demi said that it was tough to become sober again after she stopped in 2012. “When you have that much time and you open the door, it’s difficult, because there’s a part of you that feels like you want to prove that you can manage it,” she said. Now, Demi also feels “emotionally sober,” she told the Times. “To be emotionally sober means how I’m choosing to live my life, the quality of how I interact with people, my ability to show up for others. That’s all within my emotional sobriety,” she says. “Now I know I can go into a room … and if I’m uncomfortable, I don’t need to try to take the edge off it. I can actually just go: ‘Oh, wow. Isn’t that interesting? I’m a little uncomfortable right now.’”
