Aug. 15, 2024 – The popular 53 year old television presenter confessed that his issues with overeating began when he was just nine, a coping mechanism developed in response to his father’s departure from the family home due to an affair. Richard described this undercurrent as the “drum beat” that has echoed throughout his life, a constant presence into his adult years.
During an appearance on Elizabeth Day’s podcast How To Fail in April, the quiz show heavyweight spoke candidly: “It’s so ridiculous, this food stuff. Alcoholics will tell you the same.”
Continuing, he explained the illogical power of addiction: “Like it’s absurd that there’s a bottle of vodka in front of you or there’s a packet of crisps in front of you and it’s more powerful than you. It makes no sense. That’s my version of it since I was probably nine years old.”
Richard opened up about how food and weight issues have dominated his existence: “It’s been absolutely ever-present in my life weight, food, where I am in relation to it, where I am in relation to happiness because of it, hiding it. All of that stuff, it’s been absolutely like the drum beat of my life,” reports the Daily Star.
