How We Got Here: Treating Addiction In 28 Days NPR AUDIO

As far as I know, there’s nothing magical about 28 days,” says Kimberly Johnson, director of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment at SAMHSA, the federal agency that studies treatment services … Marvin Ventrell, executive director of the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers, has studied the model’s history. He says the month-long standard comes from the notion that when “someone is suffering from addiction – and in the days that this began, we’re pretty much talking about alcoholism – it made sense to people that it took about four weeks to stabilize somebody.”

At least if Germany had Hitler, the Philippines would have (me). You know my victims, I would like (them) to be all criminals, to finish the problem of my country and save the next generation from perdition.”

Opinion by John Shinholser
Addicts do recover and we should say it out loud
If we do nothing, if we live in the shadows, if we secretly hoard our recovery, then we will keep getting what we are getting: an over-crowed industrial prison complex, a runaway zealous criminal justice system, and the continued exploitation of those with this treatable mental illness … For those of you making money on the pain and suffering of our mentally ill citizens, those of you knowingly and willingly taking advantage of the “war on drugs,” creating and cashing in on an endless supply of cottage industries within this made-up war, to you and your cronies, I warn that there must be a special place in hell.

Opioid addicts get second chance in Denver Jail
DENVER – The spread of the opioid epidemic isn’t slowing down and often leads those caught up in it behind bars. The City and County of Denver announced Thursday that opioid-dependent detainees at the Denver Jail will have the option to seek treatment. Inmates can undergo methadone treatment in a controlled environment under a new program made available to participants in drug court who fail to comply with court orders.

Marketing Vaccinations
The ads say ‘Get your flu shot today,’ but it may be wiser to wait
The pharmacy chain pitches started in August: Come in and get your flu shot. Convenience is touted. So are incentives: CVS offers a 20-percent-off shopping pass for everyone who gets a shot … But some experts say the marketing may be overtaking medical wisdom since it’s unclear how long the immunity imparted by the vaccine lasts, particularly in older people … To develop vaccines, manufacturers and scientists study what’s circulating in the Southern Hemisphere during its winter, which is our summer. Then – based on that evidence – forecast what flu strains might circulate here to make vaccines that are generally delivered in late July.

Important Considerations For Inpatient Drug & Alcohol Rehabilitation
While some patients may be reluctant to seek treatment, it’s important that, as their clinician, you highlight the many benefits of inpatient treatment and are able to describe the indicators of quality treatment. Once limited to support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous, addiction treatment has advanced to include intensive options such as inpatient and residential drug and alcohol rehab. These have proven to be far more successful in contributing to sustained recovery, especially in those who have struggled with long-term addiction..

Monopoly and Influence
Is the DEA high? The agency’s emergency ban on kratom has to make you wonder what they’re smoking
Kratom, which is related to coffee, has been used for therapeutic purposes across Indochina for centuries, and has become increasingly popular in the United States over the past several years for treating chronic pain, depression, anxiety, PTSD and a variety of other ailments (veterans have been particularly vocal about the plant benefiting their lives and getting them off of a plethora of pharmaceuticals). Kratom has also been reported to help recovering opiate and heroin addicts, even though it can be mildly addictive itself if used on a daily basis – not unlike coffee.

States sue maker of opioid treatment drug
Complaint says Indivior engaged in anti-competitive behavior. Suboxone tablets have been an approved form of treatment since 2002. The tablet form of the drug lacked patent protection, but the FDA gave Indivior a seven-year “orphan drug” monopoly on Suboxone sales because the company was not expected to recoup its research and development costs. However, Schneiderman says the drug generated $2 billion in U.S. sales for Indivior by 2010. The complaint claims that when Individor’s exclusivity was set to expire seven years ago, it tried to prevent lower cost generic competition by initiating anti-competitive activities.

ESSAY from Chicago
Sobriety After 15 Years: More Discovery Than Recovery
I’m a grateful drunk who doesn’t drink (sobriety date 10/4/2001), a smoker who doesn’t smoke and a mom of boy/girl twins from IVF born 1/7/13. I’m grateful for the good the bad and the ugly. It’s great to be alive! … If I were to say I’m in discovery, it sounds too whimsical, too dreamlike, when really, that’s what it is.  I wouldn’t want to recover what I had before I got really sick in my alcoholism.  I want what I have now.  What I’ve worked for all these years and what grace has afforded me.  I want to keep discovering what lies ahead that I never dreamed possible.

David Crosby Reflects on Sobriety
By the eighties, Crosby became more well known for being a drug user and an outlaw than for his music. He said it took a prison sentence in 1986 to finally set him straight. (Crosby was busted for a number of crimes including a DUI, drug possession and weapons charges.) Currently touring for his latest solo album, Lighthouse, Crosby reflected on his near-fatal relationship with drugs that lasted for decades, and how jail finally saved his life.

These States are Most Likely to Legalize Marijuana in Nov.
Known as Prop 64, the recreational marijuana initiative would establish a 15% sales tax at the retail level and a $9.25 per-ounce cultivation tax paid for by wholesalers. Additionally, it would allow households to grow up to six plants, allow the gifting of up to a quarter-ounce of cannabis (as long as it’s to a fellow adult aged 21 or older), and establish marijuana cafes that would allow for the consumption of cannabis outside of a person’s private residence.
