“It feels good to help other children who went through what I went through,” she says. “I’m proud of Mom and Dad for asking for help and not using drugs and alcohol anymore.” Creators of the show — which has tackled homelessness, incarceration and death — said they decided to take on this issue because of data that shows 5.7 million children under age 11 live in households with a parent with substance abuse issues.
