Oct. 27, 2023 – Although caffeine can have a positive impact on focus and energy, consuming too much of it can give way to some unpleasant implications, Kevin Shah, M.D., cardiologist and director of the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at University of Utah Hospital, tells The Messenger.
“People may experience side effects including insomnia, anxiety, palpitations and headaches, among others,” Dr. Shah says.
Certain people might be more susceptible to these side effects, Dr. Shah adds.
“Some people are more sensitive to side effects, which is usually related to genetics. Otherwise, pregnant women and younger adults, and people on certain medications may also notice the side effects.”
Mary Romano, M.D., with the division of adolescent medicine and young adult health at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, echoed the same sentiment. Dr. Romano cautions that some of the negative side effects in caffeine may be more pronounced in people who take stimulant medications for conditions like ADHD, as they can have similar effects.
