In a new book of personal essays about conquering adversity, he gives a courageous and searingly honest account of sinking into destitution — and reveals how, with luck and a powerful desire to survive, he has learned to manage his addiction.

This drink/fun connection translated seamlessly to life at university, but it had other advantages, too. My homesickness, my state-school inferiority and the need to fit in could all be alleviated by consuming gallons of beer.
