June 6, 2018 – Test-referral scams. Running pill mills to dispense powerful painkillers. Medicare fraud. In recent years, eight doctors who either practiced or lived on Staten Island have been criminally convicted, mainly on federal charges. Five were convicted in a scheme in which patients were told to take blood tests at a specific lab in New Jersey. The doctors received tens of thousands of dollars in kickbacks while generating more than $2 million in business for Biodiagnostic Laboratory Services, prosecutors said. Two other doctors dispensed thousands of oxycodone prescriptions to patients who didn’t need the drug, while one physician bilked the Medicare system of millions of dollars, said prosecutors.
