The company said it is cooperating with the investigation. “We are extremely diligent in meeting our commitment to the proper prescribing of medication,” according to Kaiser. “We are also a leader in innovating ways to reduce opioid prescriptions, in particular, to help ensure they are prescribed only when safe and appropriate.” Speaking at a news conference Thursday in downtown Los Angeles, U.S. Attorney Nick Hanna said, “We are in the midst of an opioid crisis that has caused untold anguish and death. Some in the medical community are stoking the fires, flooding our communities with prescription opioids.” In cases filed over the past week, prosecutors charged doctors, a physician assistant, and a nurse practitioner with illegally writing prescriptions, sometimes with the knowledge that their so-called patients were addicts.
