CDC: Dangers of Marijuana Edibles
Government health experts warn in a new report that the risks of consuming marijuana-infused edibles like weed brownies and other snacks mustn’t be understated following the suicide last year of a man whose death has been blamed on pot. “This is not a lethal amount he ingested,” Dr. Robert Glatter, a New York City emergency physician, told HealthDay. “You could eat several of these cookies and be put into a euphoric state, and possibly have anxiety, but that, in and of itself, would not be lethal.”

Are Drug Companies Too Slow to Report Patient Deaths to the FDA?
Researchers at Stanford and the University of Minnesota have found that pharmaceutical manufacturers often wait for months, and sometimes more than a year, before telling federal drug regulators about patients who became sick after taking a medication…they found, the more often it involved a patient’s death. The findings suggest that at least some drug companies are increasing the risk for patients by dragging their feet on disclosing data about potentially unrecognized side effects.

Hidden addiction: Life as a high-functioning alcoholic
Psychologist Dr Cameron Brown says Angelina’s experience, and others’ like her, should serve as a wake-up call to how Australia treats alcoholism. “The public health response to alcohol abuse in Australia largely focuses on the working class, it’s time we challenged this and woke up to the fact that alcohol affects all part of society in a big way,” he says. She says, “I was worried because I didn’t know how boring my life will be, all I knew was that lifestyle where you can’t go out and not be on something, but she told me your life would be so much more exciting.

As Congress embarks on a rethinking of the criminal justice system – including giving judges greater discretion in sentencing – jails and prisons are also confronting myriad problems in dealing with the mentally ill. There are now 10 times as many mentally ill people in the nation’s 5,000 jails and prisons as there are in state mental institutions … Three of the nation’s largest jails – Rikers Island in New York, the county jail in Los Angeles and Cook County Jail here in Chicago – have been under federal scrutiny, in part because of mistreatment of the mentally ill.

War on drugs? What Portugal’s done right that U.S. should study
A heroin epidemic in our community has been trending for many years. Law enforcement tasked with the unwinnable battle of ridding our society of drugs has an uphill battle, similar to that of Sisyphus of Greek mythology, who was tasked with pushing a boulder up a hill, only to watch it roll back down every time, repeating his useless efforts for eternity. Like that boulder, the drug policies enacted in our nation ensure that we will never be successful on any level, and we will continue to repeat our useless efforts for eternity.

And Deadly Too
Addiction is a serious medical condition
A state hearing in Scranton this week demonstrated not only the growing impact of the opioid drug addiction epidemic, but a growing understanding that it is a public health emergency rather than a law enforcement matter alone. At least 149 people in the seven Northeast Pennsylvania counties died in 2014 due to overdoses of heroin and other opioids, according to the state Coroner’s Association. That’s grim but only an indicator of the number of addicts.
