Interventions: Historical Perspective by Rebecca Flood In the 1900s, there were high mortality rates from what was then called alcoholism. In the 1930s, psychiatry defined uncontrolled drinking as an emotional/ psychological problem. Then in 1956, the American Medical Association for the first time recognissed alcoholism as a permanent and fatal disease with defined symptoms. In the 1960s, Dr Vernon Johnson studied 200 recovered alcoholics with an attempt to figure out why they chose to quit. CONTINUED @ DBRecoveryResources.com | | New Yorkers Get Free Tickets

Clueless National Institute on Drug Abuse Leader Should Step Down In a special presentation for the press, Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) shared breathlessly that her institute was working on a “vaccine” for drug addiction. As a reporter who covers addiction/alcoholism and has members of both demographics in my family, I let out a gasp. You have to be pretty removed from the world of substance dependence to think a “vaccine” would do anything but make money for vaccine makers. Marijuana Is Not a Gateway Drug
According to studies by the ACLU, nearly half of all drug arrests were for marijuana possession, and the majority of those arrested were African-American. In some states, African-Americans were more than eight times more likely to be arrested for marijuana than whites. Bizarre Foods’ Host Talks About Drug, Alcohol Addiction: I Was “Homeless for 11 Months VIDEO Bizarre Foods fans can often find host Andrew Zimmern noshing on bull testicles, pig brains, and agonizingly spicy dishes, but there’s one item he’ll never indulge in again – alcohol. “January, 28, 1992 I had my last drink. I was a mess for a very, very long time – active drug addict, alcoholic, homeless for 11 months on the streets of New York,” Zimmern, 53, said. “I got sober, stayed sober, and my life changed. Americans Are Drinking More – A Lot More Heavy drinking is on the rise in many parts of the U.S. – up more than 17 percent since 2005, researchers reported Thursday. And rates are rising faster among women than among men. But there’s a big difference county by county, the statistics show. In some counties, more than a third of the residents are binge drinkers and more than 20 percent are heavy drinkers. Heavy drinkers are setting themselves up for liver disease and many forms of cancer, while binge drinkers can see not only health effects but damage to their jobs, marriages and friendships – not to mention the risk of vehicle accidents. | | Check out Loma Linda University

Fentanyl Deaths On Long Island Skyrocket VIDEO (CBSNewYork) – Use of the dangerous drug fentanyl is on the rise on Long Island and causing a large amount of overdoses. Forty-two people have died from fentanyl-related overdoses in the past 15 months, the highest death rate Long Island has seen in a decade, WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall reported. Recommended treatments for hepatitis ‘fail to keep patients alive’ Two key drugs recommended in international guidelines and used to treat alcoholic hepatitis are failing to increase patients’ survival and leave death rates among patients “alarmingly high”, researchers said on Wednesday. In a trial involving more than 1,000 patients, the generic medicines – prednisolone and pentoxifylline – were found to make no significant reduction in death rates over 28 days, over 90 days, or even over a year. Rise of Women Binge Drinking VIDEO The American Journal of Public Health looked at county by county data from coast to coast from 2005-2012 and also found more than a third of adults are drinking at dangerous levels. The study looked at adults over age 21, defining binge drinking as five drinks on one occasion for men and four drinks on one occasion for women. “But we are learning from the data that women are really catching up.” The outcome does not come as a surprise to Joseph Lee, MD, who serves as the youth medical director for the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation. Substance abuse a problem for America’s workforce Nearly one in 10 full-time workers in the United States has had a recent substance abuse problem, a new government study reveals. Analysis of data gathered between 2008 and 2012 from more than 111,500 adults with full-time jobs revealed that 9.5 percent of them had an alcohol or illicit-drug disorder in the previous year. “Substance use issues pose an enormous risk to the health, safety and productivity of American workers,” said Pamela Hyde, administrator of the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). | | Inside The $35 Billion Addiction Industry The vast majority of addiction treatment is based either partially or entirely on the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), but is there scientific evidence to support AA as a clinical treatment? Should addiction treatment centers make enormous profits by simply funneling substance abusers into the free fellowship of AA? Case in point, the IPO last fall of American Addiction Centers Holdings, Inc., which is really the first attempt at a publicly traded company exclusively for addiction treatment. | | Wailing Without Whiskey
Non-Alcoholic Morning Parties are a Growing Trend in Tel Aviv While alcohol is usually the crutch people use to let loose, not a single drop was served. Instead, these bright-eyed, bushy-tailed partygoers flanked the bar for coffee, juice and shots of green tea. After all, it was just the start of the day, and most people were headed to work afterwards (except maybe for the one guy dressed in a blue bathrobe). This was the Tel Aviv launch of Daybreaker, an organized movement of monthly morning parties that began in New York and has spread rapidly to include Los Angeles, San Francisco, London and other major cities. It is four times as likely to cause an overdose death as oxycodone, and more than twice as likely as morphine. In addition, experts say it is the most addictive of all opiates.
