Health Alert: Alcohol & Pregnancy VIDEO     

A new report released Thursday, Sept. 24, has new concerns about women and alcohol, especially in pregnancy.   While one in 10 pregnant women in the United States ages 18 to 44 reported drinking alcohol in the past 30 days, the concern was that a third of them reported. They reported binge drinking in the past 30 days while pregnant.   Binge drinking is defined as four or more alcoholic beverages on one occasion.

Quitting cigs helps alcoholics stay sober     

Most people with alcohol use disorder smoke cigarettes, but those who continue to smoke after they quit drinking are more likely to relapse within three years, according to a large study of recovering alcoholics. Treatment for alcohol dependence often does not focus on smoking and nicotine addiction, partially because of a view that it does not matter long-term and because it is often considered “too difficult” a request while patients are working to stop drinking.

In Washington D.C., a new generation rises up in fight against addiction VIDEO

UNITE to Face Addiction was organized by Greg Williams, who founded the nonprofit Facing Addiction and made the documentary “Anonymous People.” It was part concert and part political. “Today is the day when the silence ends,” Williams told the crowd…“By our silence, we let others define us,” read one shirt. “Visual, valuable, vocal,” was printed on another. The event’s invocation was done by leaders of churches, mosques and a Buddhist temple.

N.H. Revises Licensing Requirements for Drug Treatment Centers     

The N.H. Department of Health and Human Services is making changes to its licensing requirements for inpatient drug and alcohol treatment centers in order to address a statewide shortage of beds. Under the change, treatment providers will now be able to house two adults in rooms that are 120 square feet rather than the 160 square footage in the current rules.

AGs call on FDA to ensure warnings on liquid nicotine     

The letter asked the agency to work quickly to stop the growing number of cases of liquid nicotine poisoning among children. The attorneys general cited a survey in which nearly 9 out of 10 adults backed FDA requirements for child-resistant packaging for e-cigarettes and liquid nicotine refills. Without appropriate regulation, the letter said, public health threats resulting from exposure to nicotine will continue to rise.
