James Taylor, American singer-songwriter, says what some of us know all too well: Addiction is a genetic disease. Talking ’bout My Generation
Prescription Drugs Are Quietly Killing My Generation

“We did runners from restaurants, stole from shops for fun, and drove around wasted. Doing Valium for long periods of time takes your anxiety down so much that you don’t give a shit about anything. You also don’t remember anything. Twenty-four hours will roll into an hour. Time goes by without you feeling it.”

Forget ‘fighting demons’. We must learn how to talk properly about alcoholism

My dad was an alcoholic – and what every child of someone with this disease learns is that we can’t change things for our parents. But we can for our children. Like all children of alcoholics, I learned the sheer, choking agony of worry: is he OK? Is he safe? Is he on a floor? Is he eating? Am I doing enough? Am I a good son? Am I obeying the commandment to honour your mother and father? The guilt: why aren’t I there to look after him?

Heroin in pill form, warns Florida attorney general

People were surprised when I told them the pill I was holding in my hand looked a lot like heroin in pill form. Documented seizures in Florida prompted a warning from the Florida Attorney General’s Office and law enforcement. “They package it like that so you no longer have to keep it in a plastic baggie, no longer is it in powder form. If Prescription Drug Addiction Is a Disease, Why Does the Law Make It So Hard to Get Treatment?

In 1990, Emily vomited over the course of three straight days. She couldn’t sleep. She felt cold. She felt feverish. She felt excruciating pain throughout her body… And soon enough, she began popping pills when she could find them, but that proved difficult in Michigan, so she turned to drinking alcohol and taking diet pills in excess instead.

Whose Fault is it?
Heroin addiction ‘isn’t necessarily the individual’s fault

“It is a disease. It’s not necessarily a character flaw,” said state Rep. Garth Everett, R-Lycoming, a member of the Center for Rural Pennsylvania. Those are key findings of the center’s latest report on Pennsylvania’s crisis involving addition to opioid drugs, which include heroin and prescription painkillers such as oxycontin and Vicodin. The center is a bipartisan group that includes both House and Senate members.
